Griffith Park Health Screening Event for Diabetic Patients

Griffith Park Health Screening for Diabetic Patients with Foot Complications (Griffith Park - Friendship Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA, June 27th, 2015) Early diagnosis and intervention can prevent surgical amputations for diabetics who have foot ulcers, but patients are often uninformed and do not recognize critical warning signs. On Sat. June 27th, a team of diabetic specialists will meet with patients for a unique FREE health screening event. Participants can be screened for diabetic complications such as foot ulcers and attend a resource fair that will educate friends and family on diabetes treatment options, especially for foot ulcers in Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. The Griffith Park Friendship Auditorium will house 400 guests from 10 AM- 2 PM on a first-come-first-serve basis. It will host a stage for guest speakers, a resource fair with local diabetic organizations, and a separate area for patient screenings and medical privacy. Dr. Felix Sigal DPM, is delivering the keynote address and is leading the team of foot and diabetic specialists: endocrinologists, dieticians, ophthalmologists, & orthotics. The city and county of Los Angeles is estimated to have 67,000 residents currently suffering from some stage of Diabetic Foot Ulcers, with nearly 2,000 of them likely to require a lower extremity amputation. Diabetic patients have higher risk for foot ulcers because of poor blood circulation, loss of feeling in feet (neuropathy), irregular pressure and other potential causes. Diabetes is the leading cause for lower-extremity amputation in America, with 85% of diabetes related amputations being preceded by foot-ulcers. Research shows that early detection and intervention can halt the disease’s progression and lower risk of amputation. Preventative measures, such as buying specialty shoes, can improve the quality of life tremendously. Regularly checking your feet and visiting with your podiatrist is especially important. The P.O.E.T. Healthcare Foundation is a newly formed health education foundation. POET stands for Patient, Outreach, Education, TODAY! Our mission is to facilitate collaboration between allied healthcare professionals to educate and empower patients and caregivers. Visit www.POET-HCF.org for registration and event details.
