Room with a View
I was asleep but my heart was awake. A voice! My beloved was knocking. SONG OF SOLOMON 5:2
Taking time to put our physical love for each other in its proper perspective can mean excitement, delight and an opportunity to just have fun. But when the celebration becomes really adventuresome, it pays to keep one foot in reality. Just ask “Embarrassed in Arizona,” who wrote me this letter after one of our Weekend to Remember marriage conferences:
"Dear Dennis, when you suggested last night for us to be more creative in our romance, you never gave us warning that it could be so dangerous.
Rule #1: Always be prepared—at least with a spare key! After dinner and the sunset, my husband and I decided to take your advice and add a little romance to our evening, even to be a little daring. Staying here at the hotel, we crept out onto our fourth floor balcony where we had an incredibly romantic view, not to mention privacy. But unbeknownst to us, while we were “communicating” on the secluded balcony, the maid was turning down our bed and leaving us those ever-scrumptious mints on our pillows.
She didn’t know we were on the balcony. And we didn’t know she was in the room. Maybe you can guess the rest—she locked our sliding glass door! Two lovers, one romantic sky... and a lot more privacy than we bargained for."
I chuckled when I read her letter, wondering how they ever got back in their room! I also couldn’t help but think that marriage has a way of robbing our relationship of adventure and romance. We become way too predictable. When’s the last time you took a weekend away for just the two of you to have some romantic fun? Why not get out a calendar and find a time to begin your own adventure? Then write me if something unexpected happens!
The next time you have time—even if you need to make time—what could you do to turn your romance into something a little more fun and daring?
Ask God to bless your desires for romance with His favor and abundance.
