Hawaiian Baptists are focusing on sharing Christianity with the local community since Hawaii became the 15th state to legalize gay marriage. At the same time, a new sex education curriculum teaching the anatomy of gay sex for children between the ages of 11 and 13 is being introduced which is prompting the Waikiki Baptist Church to share faith.

Andrew Large, pastor of Waikiki Baptist Church, said that he believes his congregation should “be engaged in the civil issues and [let] our community know exactly what Christianity is all about, what the Bible has to say.”

The sex ed course called Pono Choices and is currently being taught in 12 Hawaiian schools. “Pono” refers to righteousness, a Hawaiian word also used in the state motto, “The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.”

The Pono Choices class does not teach children the importance of monogamy for health and safety reasons, nor does it address the fact that sexual intercourse between children under the age of 14 is a felony.

Hawaiian Baptists are currently working to advocate faith-based views of sex. Rick Lazor, pastor of OlaNui! in Honolulu, plans to have the church’s voices heard by serving public schools to demonstrate care for the children.
