A new report on climate change released by the United Nations is causing a stir among scientists. The 32 volume study composed by over 300 scientists warns of catastrophic repercussions if humans continue to live as they do currently, mainly that global warming will make it more difficult and costly to feed the world’s population.

Andy Atkins, executive director of the environmental group Friends of the Earth said, "The message is very, very stark: unless we cut our greenhouse gas emissions very rapidly we will be inflicting disaster on ourselves and generations to come.”

However, some members of the scientific community believe that the report is going too far in what it suggests says CBN News.

Richard Tol contributed work to the study. He says, "What the report...forgets to say is that even though climate change may reduce crop yields by 2 percent per decade, at the same time crop yields are going up by 10, 15, 20 percent per decade due to technological change. So, it's not the case that climate change will cause life-threatening famine; instead, climate change will mean that crop yields will go up more slowly."

The Heartland Institute, the libertarian think tank disagrees with the findings of the study. They say that rising world temperatures cause “no harm to the global environment or to human health.”
