Two bodies were pulled from a river in a city in Ukraine on Monday, according to reports.

The two bodies were pulled from the Donetsk River in a city in eastern Ukraine. They were identified as pro-Russian militants who had been stabbed and thrown in the river, according to police reports.

The discovery comes just after three people died in a shootout at a checkpoint.  Around 2 a.m., four cars drove toward the checkpoint, which was controlled by pro-Russian militants. The people in the cars then opened fire, killing three who were standing guard.

“We thought nothing would happen because it was the holy night,” said Yevgeny Bondarenko, 62. “Who can we trust now?”

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. was supposed to arrive Monday in Kiev, the capital. He was scheduled to hold talks with members of the interim government this week.

In those meetings, Biden will "discuss the international community's efforts to help stabilize and strengthen Ukraine's economy and to assist Ukraine in moving forward on constitutional reform, decentralization, anti-corruption efforts, and free and fair presidential elections on May 25th," a statement from the White House said.

Also Monday, Sergey V. Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, accused Ukraine of violating last week’s agreement to stop violence in the area.

“Steps are being taken — above all by those who seized power in Kiev — not only that do not fulfill, but that crudely violate, the Geneva agreement,” Lavrov said.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday said that members of Right Sector were not the attackers. The Right Sector group also denied any involvement.
