United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron has caused a stir with British liberals for referring to England as a Christian country. The Prime Minister said that Britons should be “more confident about our status as a Christian country” but his comment received immediate backlash reports The Independent.

55 liberal leader refuted Cameron’s claims; among those include author Philip Pullman and philosopher AC Grayling.

There is debate now over which side is right. Statistically, 59 percent of people in England and Wales identified as Christians, according to the 2011 census. However, the 2001 census said 72 percent of the population considered themselves Christians by name alone.

The Liberal group also argued that the Christian population would be far fewer if 1.2 million Christian immigrants had not boosted the number.

Christian leaders are concerned that Christians might become “strangers in our own land” as the Right Reverend Mark Davies worded it. “Christianity is the single most important element in England’s history,” Davies said. “From our legal system to our constitution, it is at the very foundations of national identity.”
