A new poll supports Prime Minister David Cameron’s claims that England is a Christian country. The Telegraph surveyed 2,000 Britons and found that most citizens do identify as Christians.

The findings of the survey include the following:

  • 56 percent of respondents agreed with Cameron’s statement.

  • 60 percent of men agreed with the Prime Minister while 53 percent of women agreed.

  • 73 percent of citizens over the age of 65 sided with Cameron.

  • 30 percent claimed that Britain is a non-religious nation.

  • Half of respondents believed that Christians were afraid to express their beliefs.

Despite the majority of survey-takers that supported the Prime Minister’s claims, only 14 percent answered that they practice Christianity. 38 percent called themselves “non-practising” Christians while 41 percent were not religious at all.

Lord Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury said that he believes England is in a “post-Christian” state, though the country’s “cultural memory” is “quite strongly Christian.”

“A Christian nation can sound like a nation of committed believers, and we are not that,” Williams said.
