The NiSource energy company is taking heat for rescinding a job after it was offered to a homeschooled man.

Home School Legal Defence Association (HSLDA) lawyer Mike Donnelly spoke on behalf of the Ohio man.

According to Donnelly, the man, who does not wish to be identified, graduated from high school in 2010 and had transcripts that were “well done.” The man had gone on to take seven classes in community college achieving grades that put him on the Dean’s List. He was offered a position with NiSource that required a high school diploma, but it was rescinded after the discovery of his homeschooled education.

The actions of the company were legal. NiSource requires employees to possess an official high school diploma; grades and transcripts are not sufficient reports World Magazine.

“Homeschooled students do not receive an Ohio high school diploma recognized by the State Board of Education,” reads the Ohio DOE website.

Without a diploma, the man could likely take a GED test and get the job, but most of the homeschooling community would find the suggestion insulting. “A GED is what people who drop out of high school take. Homeschoolers are not high school dropouts,”Donnelly said.
