Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal piqued the interest of influential Republican pastors while in Lynchburg, Virginia to speak at Liberty University’s commencement.

Jindal is aiming to represent the Republican party in the 2016 election reports The Washington Post.

“He has the convictions, and he has what it takes to communicate them,” Brad Sherman said. Sherman was influential in Mike Huckabee’s winning campaign for delegate in 2008.

Jindal’s commencement speech touched on recent hot-button news items including the cancelled HGTV show “Flip it Forward” and the Hobby Lobby birth control debate.

In regard to Hobby Lobby, Jindal said that the family was “committed to honor the Lord by being generous employers, paying well above minimum wage and increasing salaries four years in a row even in the midst of the enduring recession. None of this matters to the Obama administration.”

Jindal also explained his journey from Hinduism to the Christian faith as a youth. He told the Liberty graduates and guests that he used to read his Bible in a closet, so his parents wouldn’t find out. Jindal now identifies as what he calls “an evangelical Catholic.”

“I read the words of Jesus Christ, and I realized that they were true. I used to think that I had found God, but I believe it is more accurate to say He found me,” Jindal said.
