According to Nigerian officials, 63 kidnapped women and girls have escaped from Boko Haram captivity. The females, who were abducted from the village of Kummabaza on June 22, were reportedly able to flee while the militants were involved in a battle.

Abbas Gava, a local government official, confirmed that “63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home” on Friday night. “They took the bold step when their abductors moved out to carry out an operation,” he said.

"We don't have the details of their escape yet, but we believe God gave them the opportunity at the time the insurgents came in their large numbers to attack Damboa where about 12 soldiers, five policemen, over 50 Boko Haram members and unspecified number of civilians were killed yesterday [Saturday]."

A separate group of over 200 Nigerian girls were kidnapped by the militants on April 14 from a school in Chibok village. The majority of those young women have not yet returned.
